Malodor conditions refer to persistent or unusual strong odors coming from the body, breath, or other areas that are not explained by hygiene alone.

These odors can include:

  • sulfur or “rotten egg” smells

  • fecal-like odors

  • sour or acidic smells

  • ammonia-like smells

  • strong or unusual body and breath odor

Research shows that these odors are not random. They are linked to specific chemical compounds produced inside the body.

How Odors Are Produced in the Body (Medical Understanding)

Medical research shows that body and breath odor is mainly caused by bacteria breaking down substances in the body.

These bacteria produce odor-causing chemicals called volatile compounds, including:

  • sulfur compounds (rotten egg smell)

  • ammonia

  • trimethylamine

  • indole and skatole (compounds directly linked to fecal odor)

These compounds can be produced in areas such as the mouth, skin, and especially the digestive system.

In some cases, these substances may move from the gut into the bloodstream and affect body or breath odor.

The gut contains trillions of bacteria that help digest food.

When this system is imbalanced, it may lead to increased production of odor-causing compounds.

This may happen with:
